Have you every noticed that it requires a village to get healthy? It really does if you think about it. Creating a healthy lifestyle is so much easier if you have friends and family to support you. Have you ever noticed that you and your friends tend to hang out together in the same places? You have similar interests and so you find yourself in the same places. When you want to get healthy and stay that way it is important to surround yourself with people that want to live that way too. When you do you will see how easy it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In fact you will notice that you feed one another ideas about how to continue to live healthy. Here is an example about what I mean. Sunday afternoon me and one of my closest friends, who happens to be a medical doctor, decided to go for a walk after church. This is a common activity for us. We walk around Washington, DC and chat about our activities from the previous week. Early in the morning I had made a vegetable and fruit summer salad and I decided to bring some for our walk. My friend and I often share our new dishes and give one another feedback on what we think. She was delighted when I popped open our new snack to taste. We continued to walk and found ourselves in front of the local health food store and decided to go in and pick up a few things for dinner. We happened to stumble on some new foods that we were curious about so we tried to figure out how to incorporate them into future recipes. Then we headed back to our cars.
We support one another by offering activities that support healthy eating, exercise, stress management, and spiritual support. This helps us to stay on track by creating and demonstrating healthy behavior. The opposite can also be true when I go on trips with my family where there is plenty of processed foods, dairy, and wheat which are not on my daily food list and having them in the house is tempting to steer me off my health goals. Consider it!
