Self-Love: Taking Time to Love Yourself

What do you do to love yourself? What does it mean to take time to love yourself?

What is self-love? According to “A Seven-Step Prescription for Self-Love,” a Psychology Today article, “Self-love is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth. Self-love is dynamic; it grows by actions that mature us.”

Self-love is a practice. It requires you to have appreciation and intimacy for yourself. It requires you to show vulnerability. This can be a challenge because our world is full of stressful situations that make it hard to live open and vulnerable.

Here is a quote from Yogi Bhajan that describes self-love. “You are very powerful, provided you know how powerful you are.”

Interested in knowing more about practices that may help you to find self-love? Consider bringing some or all of these into your daily life:

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a practice that allows you to know more about yourself and your feelings. The more you practice mindfulness, the easier it becomes to be clear about how to take care of yourself in any situation.

Nourishment

Make sure to nourish yourself. Physically, nourishment means feeding yourself good food and staying hydrated. Food is fuel for your body and your mind. Feed yourself regular meals and snacks, and drink enough water.

In doing this you are showing yourself love. It can also mean to exercise and get proper sleep so that your body can restore itself.

It's also important to nourish your soul. This can mean spending time with inspiring quotes, books or movies that help you to continue to grow.

Here is a lovely example: “Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.” - Veronica A. Shoffstall

Establishing priorities

Take time to decide what things to say yes to, and what to say no to. This is one of the best ways to show self-love. There are only so many hours in a day. It is important to create priorities with your time and resources.

Learning to set priorities and boundaries allows you to stay in balance.

Encompass yourself with nurturing people

Find other people that are loving. Look for people and communities where they provide support for your and your dreams. If you surround yourself with people that believe in self-love they will help you to reinforce it in your own life. If you find yourself.

Treat yourself with kindness

Be gentle to yourself. Watch what you say to yourself and about yourself in your mind. Are you giving yourself a mental high five every time you do something good, or are you hard on yourself every moment of the day? Extending compassion towards yourself is an essential part of self-love.

Are you doing these activities in your daily life? If not, can you pick one and start practicing it every day for a week? See how self-love changes your-life.
