Are you interested in learning more about detoxification? I often enjoy listening to discussions between people about detox, or a detoxification process. I think the consensus from the conversations that people have is that detoxification is good. It is fascinating to hear all the different ways that people talk about how to go about the detoxification process. Some people consider a juice or water fast as a detox. Others consider taking supplements that make them go to the bathroom, urinating or having a bowel movement as a detox. While others consider a medical treatment called colonics a detox. In different parts of the country detox might even mean cleansing yourself from a drug or alcohol problem. Actually all of these parts can be of a detoxification process, but they are not the definition of detoxification. Detox or detoxification means to get rid of toxins that have entered or are produced in the body. It is just that simple. With such a broad definition there are many ways that people can go about the detox process. Our bodies handle detoxification processes every single day. Each day we have to handle these toxins or pollutants that enter our body. It is a normal part of living. Sometimes we don’t have control over toxins in the environment like air pollution, chemical pollution, etc… we have to process them. Some toxins we do have control over like foods and food additives, preservatives, alcohol and nicotine and we have to process those too.
For the purposes of this conversation we will discuss detox as a way of eliminating toxins from the body in a safe and appropriate way for a specific period of time, a detoxification plan. There are several components to a detox plan to eliminate toxins from the body and the mind. We need to consider the foods that we eat, how to improve our digestion and elimination, cleansing our skin, the amount of water we are drinking, how much sleep we are getting and how to reduce toxic situations and thoughts. We also need to consider that when we start a detox it is often the case that you will experience side effects of cleansing because our body is releasing toxins. These can include headaches, ache or skin rashes, hunger, digestive problems, low level energy, congestion, just to name a few. These usually subside in a few days as the toxins are released. All of these need to be considered before starting a detox plan. Once you have considered these you are ready to learn the details of a detox plan. We will talk about the details an upcoming post so stay tuned……
