The connection between physical and emotional health

This month has been full of unexpected events. I have had some extremely stressful situations that I wasn’t sure how I to manage along with all of my responsibilities as a doctor, family member, and devoted friend. What got me through was going back to your roots, to remind us of the simplicity of having a sweet life.

This month, I had the opportunity to go to two reunions, my 30th high school reunion and my college homecoming. Both experiences took me back to my roots with love of friends that have known me for more than half of my life. It reminded me of simple times and that the most important things are love and support. It was a blessing to have so many of my friends share moments in our childhood that made them laugh or smile. It was wonderful to hear that something we did impacted them in a positive way so many years later. It was nice to be told that they were proud of what I have accomplished so far in my life.

There is something wonderful about being around people that know YOU. They know your authentic self, your soul, person striped away of titles or masks. Some of my high school friends have known me since I was 5 or 6 years old. Hugs from friends that have known me so long are the best hugs in the world.

In the moments this month when I was stressed about whatever was happening, I remembered I had people to support me and it got me through the difficult situation.

One of the major reasons for stress is a sense of feeling alone or disconnected from love and support. Stress releases chemicals that can change our physical well-being and can cause high blood pressure, high blood sugars, high cholesterol, heart disease or cancer.

There is a strong correlation between our physical health and our mental and emotional health. We can’t take for granted that your emotional health plays a big role in other areas of your health. Our programs focus on managing stress along with managing other areas of your health… and the results reflect people feeling better and staying that way!
