Why Are So Many Women Confused About Reaching Menopause?

Clearing Up Menopause Confusion: 3 Myths You Need to Know

As we celebrate Women’s Health Month, I want to take a moment to have a real conversation about menopause. I’ve spoken with so many women who ask, “What exactly is menopause?” and I get it – it can be confusing. Let’s take a closer look at 3 common myths and clear up the confusion

Myth 1: Perimenopause and menopause are only about your periods stopping

I know it’s easy to think that menopause is just about your period ending, but there’s so much more going on. Perimenopause and menopause are about a shift in hormones, especially estrogen and progesterone. These hormonal changes affect your entire body. The transition usually lasts 4-7 years, and for women of color, it can take even longer. Estrogen affects every cell in your body, so you might start noticing symptoms like mood swings, brain fog, or even sleep changes long before your period stops. It’s not just about the period—it’s about everything else that comes with it.

Myth 2: Menopause is just one day

It sounds simple, right? No period for 12 months and boom, you’re in menopause. But once you stop having periods, that’s just the beginning. Menopause is a phase you stay in for the rest of your life. It’s not a one-time event but an ongoing process that shifts your body in lasting ways. That’s why understanding this is so important. It’s not about a single day—it’s a lifelong change.

Myth 3: The only symptoms of menopause are hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, and period changes

I often hear that menopause is just hot flashes and sleep problems, but let me tell you—it’s much more than that. There are over 40 symptoms that can affect everything from your bones and breasts to your heart and digestion. You might experience changes in body composition, like increased belly fat, or even emotional shifts like anxiety or brain fog. It’s a lot more than just those classic symptoms.

So, what’s the takeaway here? Menopause is a journey, not just a destination. By understanding these myths, you’ll feel more confident navigating this phase of life. And remember, you’re not alone—I’m here to guide you through every step of the way.
